Hey everyone, I've got a 1973 Johnson 20r73a that's been idle for about 3 years.

Checked compression, changed lower oil, and swapped spark plugs and put some fresh gas into it to see if it would start.

Started on the 2nd pull, but wouldnt stay running. I've got a carb kit so I am gonna pull and clean that.

My question is after I pulled it out of my trash can of water, I noticed later some black oil dropping from what I think is is the water intake and the water output (which was spraying very strongly, so that's good) what is this? Normal? Or a problem?

I took some pictures:

Unburned fuel and oil. Many many threads on this.
Would also change out the water pump assembly or at least the impeller. Cheap compared to a burned powerhead.........

Older outboards are less than Eco-friendly. The exhaust puts out a constant stream of frothy oil and fuel. You'll get used to it.... They also demand you take care of them and get totally familiar with all their inner workings..... Get the manual and figure out how to do all those maintenance chores like impellers and carb cleaning and it will last a lifetime.

Sorry, i searched around the web and this forum, but I guess I didn't have the right idea of what terms to use to make a fruitful search.

Thanks
