Way Past A Basic Re-Carpeting Job?

Post by DacMan » 04 Oct 2016, 18:23

I understand how to re-carpet a boat on the basic level. But my Lowe 170 has compnents that appear to have been carpeted then rivetted in place to make the deck. I've included pictures. How do I do it?

Also the gunnel is trimmed in an odd way. The deck and the gunnel meet and seem to have a carpeted trim at the joint. Pic below

eeeewwwwwww that's gonna be one tough job.
I redid my 16' Bluefin and it was done correctly by the P/O.

yours looks like a total tear out and maybe drill out all the rivets
and replace them before the new carpet.
Rivets ON carpet ?????? that is a new one to me.

suggestion: after carpet removal, put a propane bottle torch
to the rivets and see how easy it is to melt out any carpet remnants
to see how tight the rivets are set....... if you are lucky, they will
all be tight and you can carpet over them without loosing any
structural integrity. That would be totally your call.

Thanks for the reply, it is an odd setup, looking at the boat I'm confident they installed carpet on many of the compnents before installation, and that's why it's riveted over the carpet. Considering the value of the boat maye I should just leave it be.

Lunds are the same way. Completely re-doing all that will be a major headache. Good Luck!

My Starcraft is that way. I'm pretty sure it's factory.
I fish, therefore, I am.

So basically I will need to drill all the rivets out and remove the compnents, carpet, and then, reinstall the conponents?

Last question, what do I do if I want to use a front deck pad? I can't expect a rivet to hold compressing both carpet and a pad right?
