Re: Tomahawk Nationals 2019

Flowie - Thanks for taking the time to look!
We had a great time up there and brought back a few examples of outboard history to share with those who are interested.

Re: SeaKing head gasket question

Guys - It is not necessarily the oil ratio that makes the smoke! I also have engines that run on a 16:1 ratio and they are much larger engines that the one we are talking about that do not smoke as much as this one does. The most common culprit is the air/fuel ratio! The engine in the tank looked l...

Re: 1989 Mercury Classic 50

There aren't many things that will cause what you described. Water in fuel will do it and your 200 yds would be about right for the water to hit. Pump some fuel into a clear container and see. A weak fuel pump will do as you describe. You can diagnose simply by hand pumping the primer bulb while ru...

Re: 1989 Mercury Classic 50

The fact that the engine stopped on it's own after a few hundred yards and you experienced a water pump failure was what caught my attention. Secondly you said the engine bogged down and killed itself. By chance did it feel like something was putting the brakes on the flywheel and stopping the engi...

Re: Carb versus EFI 9.8/9.9 4 stroke

2 grand to me is a heck of a lot of money! Find a good Johnson or Evinrude 9.9 for less than half of that and enjoy better acceleration, probably better top speed, and decent fuel economy. With a 4-stroke you will get a quieter engine at idle (above the water line) but probably just as loud at WOT,...

Re: Help Removing Lower Unit from Old Force Outboard (with video)

That issue comes from lack of maintenance. shine a light up in the end of the crank and make sure your splines are still there and in usable condition before going ahead with the job.

Re: Help Removing Lower Unit from Old Force Outboard (with video)

Unfortunately it can be rusted splines in the crank/driveshaft area. Only three things hold it on. You have the bolts loose, the water tube can make it stick a little, and the splines.....

Brass if you want to make them.
You should be able to find them easily online or ebay though. Same as a Johnson 5 1/2

Re: EPA gas tanks

Your key words there on the fuel were that it remained in usable condition over the Fall and Winter....with Stabil. Those are the cold months and the fuel was probably covered as well I would think. At least you are using something to preserve the fuel. Lawnmowers get run frequently when fueled for...

Re: 1976 Sea King 6hp

No sound when I watched the video.
When you get into an older project engine like this just go through all the systems and be done with it. It is only at that point that you know what has been done and in what condition everything is in. Makes it simple!

Re: 1981 Evinrude 50hp Questions

Both are drain holes for water to escape. If those are plugged then when the water freezes the castings will split. As far as the oily stuff coming out? Again pretty normal for a 38 year old engine assuming the shift rod seal is intact and the driveshaft seal is as well. Check your gear oil at the ...

Re: 1990 Evinrude 25hp poor/no spark

Remove and clean each ground wire and the connection area on the block. Check spark again. Disconnect the key switch harness from the engine at the plug and, with the spark plugs out, check for spark....keep the plugs away from the plug holes! Tell us what you find. Your ohms check you made is not ...
