Can someone help me with this paint math?

You apply the OTF until no more will soak into the wood and it pools on the wood. Then you wipe off the excess and let it dry for 72 hours or more. Then apply one or two coats of straight Spar. Thank you kind sir. Should I do the back and then let it dry before flipping it over to do the visible si...

Can someone help me with this paint math?

LOL not trivial at all !!! ok - you more or less answered your own question. if you are using a 10oz cup, 10% would be one ounce of thinner per cup. 5% would be half that at 1/2oz of thinner per cup, yada yada yada your location, humidity, temperature, etc, dictates what kind of thinner and how muc...

Can someone help me with this paint math?

Hello all, So I am going to be applying a coat of Rustoleums bare metal primer on to a thin layer of their self etching paint today but I need some help.. I am going to be spraying it on and I have a math question. I think I am going to thin it a tiny bit to help it flow through the gun a bit better...

Acetone wash?

I took mine down to bare aluminum only because I won't have a motor until next season and I figured what the hell.. But I washed it down with tsp and water solution, and after it dried I applied the gluvit, then I just scuffed if up (the gluvit) with some 220 and then washed it down with a 50/50 vin...

What method did yous use to remove the transom? Is there a trick into popping out the bolts? My PO was very generous when securing the transom to the stern. I used a combination of an angle grinder and a sawzall. Two of the bolts came free naturally with a wrench but the others were a b*tch. The tr...

Oh and while the glut was hardening yesterday I replaced the rotten bunks on the trailer and threw some new carpet on them. Not much of a pic for that but heres one. IMG_3795.JPG Also if any of my readers remembers my serial number was worn off on the placard and couldn't get an exact year of the bo...

Looking good! I have a question about your paint prep work. After you put the self etching primer on, how long did you let it cure before you scuffed it up for the next paint work? I applied the rusto self etching primer on Saturday evening and today I took my fingernail to a hidden area and it scr...

Ok a little more work today on the boat. Finally got to do some fun stuff! My uncle was generous enough to donate 3/4 of a sheet of some marine plywood he had laying around. (He/we used to work at a fancy lumber yard) It's 3/4" Sapele plywood. He only needed a small portion for a firewall on the ult...

Ok so finally got some progress on the ol' tin! Saturday morning the GF and I went to the local marine supply place and picked up a quart of gluvit, and also a bunch of cans of good old rustoleum self etching primer. Now it has been a week since I had finished removing all the paint and I hadn't scu...

Looks good! And don't worry, I'm pretty new here too. I don't have a tone of comments on my build page yet either. (except from engineered, he's commented a few times, thanks!) I figure most guys are busy with fishing right now.. Tis the season anyways.. But anyways do you know yet what material you...

Manufacturer recommends roughing the surface with 80-100 grit and applying an Aluminum Prep Wash over bare aluminum. I've seen others recommend putting on a Zinc Chromate primer prior to application, but manufacturer does not have that in their literature and what I've read said bare surface is pre...

Gotta say, you've done a heck of a job on getting down to bare aluminum. I quit after not having much luck with chemical stripper... but I did get most of the old paint off. Where it was particularly stubborn to even mechanical removal, I just accepted that as a good base. I'm hoping my build goes ...

IMHO, for best results on bare aluminum, you should use an acid-etching zinc chromate primer before doing anything like Gluvit. Gluvit is also an epoxy-based product and sun light and UV rays destroys it, so if not hidden it needs to be over-coated (painted). Thanks for the reply So you don't do gl...
